Abstract

This study is an exploration of the psychological ramifications for transgender individuals when completing a form requiring them to self-select as either male or female. Respondents indicated having to provide additional information to clarify their gender or opting to not to provide gender information. Further, respondents indicated concerns regarding feelings of safety, anxiety, and depression when asked to disclose one’s gender. A majority indicated that disclosing their gender has lead to uncomfortable conversations with their healthcare provider. Over half indicated the provider did not respect their gender after disclosing and many indicated an expectation to educate the provider after disclosure.
