School to pull sex book

Changing bodies, changing lives by Ruth Bell Alexander
Sandy Union High School Board, Jeanne Doty, Rev. R. Dale Edwards, Sandy Assembly of God Church, Roberta K. Hutton, Jan Luelling
The Sandy Union High School board voted to remove the sex education reference book “Changing Bodies, Changing Lives” from the school shelves permanently. In the future the book will only be available to councilors who are working with students and parents. The book had been challenged by Rev. R. Dale Edwards, pastor of the Assembly of God Church in Sandy. Superintendent Roberta K. Hutton said that she would meet with the school librarian, Jan Luelling, to see what other books could take the place of the removed material. Hutton stated that the complaints against the book came from obscenities and graphic nature of the material, not the educational content. She also stated that some parents want the school to do a more complete job in teaching about sexuality, and that the school is responsible for teaching students who do not have parental ties in the community.
