Abstract

The book Deenie by Judy Blume will remain on the shelf at John Day Junior High School, but it will be on a restricted sign out list at Humbolt Elementary School. The school board voted, after a long debate, to follow Superintendent Dean Nodine’s recommendation. Don Jordan who raised the complaint said that he would respect the school boards decision but is prepared to go through this again if necessary. The book is about a child who deals with scoliosis, however there is sexual content that some see as inappropriate for children to read. The article ends with various statements from board members about how if you feel it is wrong then it is your right to not read it.

Keywords
