Abstract

Jerry Sanderson of P.O.P. has been told to take his case to the Oregon Legislature. Coos Bay police and Coos Bay district attorney Paul Burgett said that Sanderson had contacted them about possible ways to remove Playboy from retail outlets and the public library. The request to remove the magazine from the library cannot be honored because libraries are exempt from Oregon’s obscenity statutes. Burgett said that the Supreme Court has said the materials are not obscene or pornographic because they do not show explicit sexual contact. Burgett also said that that Sanderson has the right to picket and attempt to change the public opinion but the government is very reluctant to allow official censorship.
