Abstract

The Clackamas School District allegedly censored a play that was performed at the Rex Putnam High School. The play Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck was censored to lessen concerns over what audience members would object to while seeing the play. A few teachers and students have sued the school district for the censorship of various profanities that take the Lord’s name in vain. The lawsuit says that the school favored a particular religion by removing the words and then not explaining why the change was made before the performance. The censorship caused two demonstrations before the school board, one where thirty-five people showed up with a petition signed by another eighty-six that supported the decision. Another demonstration had comments from those who opposed the decision and a petition signed by five hundred and six people was shown.
