Abstract

The Oregon Library Association and is concerned about the potential impact of Ballot Measure 9 and urges Oregonians to vote no on the measure. If Measure 9 passes, librarians fear the Oregon Citizens Alliance would demand the removal of books by or about homosexuals from library shelves. Deborah L. Jacobs, O.L.A. president, argues that evaluating literature on the basis of a writer’s sexual orientation is dangerous and discriminatory. Many books written by the nation’s favorite authors, like Walt Whitman, could be challenged.
