Abstract

Patrick Grace, chair of the Oregon Library Association Intellectual Freedom Committee, urged Oregonians not to support the petition sponsored by the Oregon Citizens Alliance. The petition prohibits state, regional and local governments from using funds to promote or encourage homosexuality. The mission of libraries has been to protect the right of free speech by providing access to diverse materials. The language of the initiative could lead to the removal of books about homosexuality or those written by homosexual authors from library shelves.
