Summer Bridge Math Program: Moodle, WeBWorK, and Khan Academy intertwined

Chris Lane, Pacific University

The purpose of this workshop is to introduce the participants to our Summer Math Bridge Program at Pacific and specifically how we use Moodle, the Khan Academy, and the open-source online homework system WeBWorK together to help successfully bridge the mathematical gap for incoming freshmen who intend to major in a science. In particular, we will explain and illustrate how Moodle provides the social and organizational structure for our program, how the Khan Academy provides many of the tutorial videos and basic math drills, and how WebWorK reinforces the Khan Academy problems in a way that allows the students to more easily ask specific mathematical questions.

The methods we will use during this workshop include a brief lecture discussing the basic aspects of both the Khan Academy and WeBWorK as they pertain to our program. In addition to this, we will also touch on the installation of the WeBWorK software and the various hosting opportunities available, coaching in the Khan Academy, and especially monitoring student success in both systems. Participants will also have the opportunity to experiment with both the Khan Academy and WeBWorK in the context of our program. Ample time, too, will be given to a Q&A session at the end of the workshop.

The implications to the participants are that they will have a better sense of how each of these three software packages work and how to potentially use them either in the classroom or in a similar program at their own school. We are also interested in improving our Bridge Program at Pacific, and would appreciate feedback from the participants in this regard. Ultimately, we’d like this to be a session where we think about how best to help unprepared and often underrepresented students solidify their understanding of mathematics in an online course so they can reach their full potential in college and in their career.

Abstract
