School Garden Uses in Oregon

Mike Charles
Rich VanBuskirk, Pacific University
Scott McCahon, Forest Grove High School
Claire Buhler, Forest Grove High School

Method:Addresses for schools in Oregon with gardens were obtained from the Oregon School Garden Association. These addresses were geocoded and then added as a layer to the map using ArcGIS, the professional grade mapping tool.

Pacific Geospatial Semester, a unique University/School partnership (http://wordpress.ed.pacificu.edu/geospatialsemester/): Use of this tool was supported by her teacher Scott McCahon who was in turn supported by faculty at Pacific University in the adoption of this advanced tool into a local high school classroom as part of the Pacific Geospatial Semester, a course taken for college credit but taught at the local high sschol.

Background: Claire helped establish a school garden while at the Forest Grove Community School when she was in Grade 1/2.She then enrolled in the Pacific Geospatial Semester at Forest Grove High School where she extended her inquiry.

Conclusions:

76% of the schools in Oregon have a garden used for educational purposes. Some of the gardens grow food that is eaten by students at the school where that is permitted by local health codes.
