Blending Apps to Teach a Science Unit about Penguins

Alesha Brock, Pacific University
Amber Chase, Pacific University

We have worked with the first grade team at Scholls Heights elementary in Beaverton, Oregon to create a science unit on penguins that integrates technology. The unit consists of app blending by using Google Slides as a host to several other apps including Chatterbox and Adobe Voice. We would like to share our data, observations, and student portfolios with OTEN 2016 attendees and offer recommendations based on our finding for educators looking to integrate technology into their classrooms. Attendees will be given access to our resources via a Google Site and will be able to demo the apps while we answer questions.

Abstract

With the rapid increase of technology in schools, curriculum adaptation has become more important than ever. The intent of this presentation is to demonstrate ways in which blending applications for iPads can enhance a curriculum about penguins in a first grade classroom. During the presentation we will discuss the process, application blends, and other resources used during the project.
