Abstract

Context: Many articles are available linking depression and HIV I AIDS patient populations, however this study is focused on the time period before, during and immediately after pharmacotherapy protocol changes.

Objective: To determine if depression is present as a product of the necessity for a protocol change.

Design: Patients who had been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS were privately and individually interviewed regarding negative moods during the target period.

Setting: Twenty-four outpatients at the Immune Deficiency Clinic of Kaiser Permanente, Portland, Oregon were solicited for recruitment into the study.

Patients: Four (4) patients responded and were enrolled for the study.

Results: Of one female, and three males, all expressed exact or very similar symptoms during protocol changes. The sample was small (N=4), but the findings correlate with strong negative emotions emerging when the patient is required to undergo a new combination of antiretroviral medications.

Conclusions: Even with the small sample, there does seem to be a definite emergence of symptoms indicative of a negative mood as a result of awareness of an impending protocol change. Further studies are warranted.
