The purpose of this study was to examine which neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) ON:OFF time of a 1:3 duty cycle would result in the least amount of muscle fatigue. Seventeen subjects ranging in age from 20-27 received 3 different NMES ON:OFF times in three separate testing sessions' A counterbalanced testing order was used to determine the ordering of the 5:15, 10:30, and 15:45 stimulus times. Testing was performed on an isometric dynamometer (Cybex) which transmitted the NMES elicited extension torques to a computer program for analysis. A 3 level repeated measures ANOVA was used to determine the effect of the 3 stimulus ON:OFF times on muscle fatigue. The results showed that the onset of muscle fatigue required significantly less time with the application of the 15:45 stimulus time than either the 10:30 or 5:15 stimulus times (p < .05). The 10:30 stimulus time was also found to require significantly less time than the 5:15 stimulus time (p < .05). These results indicate that the onset of muscle fatigue is significantly related to the length of stimulus ON time.
