Abstract

Concurrent visual feedback and goal setting (Goal-VF) were examined using the control theory. An assumption of the control theory is that goal/feedback discrepancies create a self correcting motivation to reduce the discrepancy and increase performance. The effect of Goal-VF on isokinetic knee extension was compared with visual feedback (VF) alone and no feedback/control (C). The Cybex 340 collected best work repetition (BWR) data. Results showed significant difference between the C group and the Goal-VF group, but not between the VF and the Goal-VF group. Although the hypotheses were not fully supported the trend of the individual BWR data suggests that goal/feedback discrepancies can be useful to a patient with respect to motivation and performance improvement.
