Abstract

The present study was an exploratory study offering a critical, social justice approach to understanding transgender experience and broadening recognition of diverse transgender populations. This study explored the importance of surgical transition procedures to participants’ gender identities, as well as explored barriers to accessing such surgical transition procedures. Specifically, respondents indicated that a significant minority did not consider access to surgical transition procedures important to their gender identity. For those participants who desired to access surgical transition procedures, over half (65.4%) indicated they experienced socioeconomic status barriers to accessing desired surgical procedures. Further, 65.0% of respondents indicated that socioeconomic status created a moderate to complete barrier. These findings suggest that consideration of an individuals desire to access surgical transition procedures do not provide a complete picture of transgender experiences.
