Abstract

The topic of this research paper is school garden projects. This topic was chosen because I have a strong interest in gardening and was interested in finding out how teachers integrate classroom curriculum in the garden. Background information regarding school gardens was obtained from recent magazine articles and a teacher curriculum guide. Interviews, primarily with elementary teachers and visits to school gardens served to provide information regarding school gardens in the Eugene area as well as how gardens are used in classroom instruction. My research is geared toward answering the following research questions:

1. How pervasive are gardening projects?
2. How can schools work with communities to form garden projects?
3. How can teachers integrate a garden project with class curriculum?

My hope is that this research project will guide and inspire teachers interested in creating school gardens.
