The mixed-age or blended classroom, in which students are grouped in classrooms with at least two grade levels represented, is a learning environment that is geared toward each child's individual academic growth and development. This learning environment allows children at different developmental levels to learn at their own pace, instead of grouping children by their chronological age and expecting them to move at the same rate as all of their peers.
Mixed-age or blended classrooms have been around since the one room school house, their popularity surging during the 1960's and 1970's. In the 1990's educators are looking at different ways to effectively meet the needs of all students. Research has shown that students in a mixed-grade or blended classroom during their primary years do as well if not better than students in single grade classrooms.
The greatest strength of the mixed-age or blended classroom is its ability to allow students to progress at their own rate. There are a variety of ability levels in blended classrooms and teachers plan curriculum that is appropriate for all the students in the class.
