A hot topic for educational debate in the 1990's is the need for a multicultural curriculum in public schools. With a rise in minority population, there is a need to address their cultures as part of the normal curriculum. There are critics, however, in the educational field who believe a multicultural based curriculum would have a damaging impact on the way students perceive different ethnic groups. This paper explores the issue of a multicultural based curriculum in social studies and its possible impact. The main emphasis is on secondary level U.S. History courses. It is a literature based exploration with an observation of how one secondary school is addressing the debate.
