Abstract

"From Sandwiches To Sushi" takes the reader on a journey through an elementary Japanese immersion program through the students' eyes. It explores the purpose of magnet schools and goals of foreign language immersion, evaluating how the program at Westwood elementary combines all the elements into a whole that meets the needs of the students. The students are the main focus of the study. A racially and culturally diverse group of high achievers, their story shows the best that an elementary immersion program can offer. It shows how parents, teachers, administrators and the community can combine to form a support network that virtually insures success for all students.
