Abstract

This educational inquiry focuses on the ideas and sentiments of six foreign high school students as they reflect on their experiences studying and living in the USA. Their comments, collected from questionnaires and interviews, are analyzed as they pertain to the following areas: (1) academic progress, (2) personal development, (3) shifting perceptions of the USA and home country, (4) favorite aspects of the study-abroad experience, (5) least favorite aspects of the study-abroad experience, and (6) impressions of American secondary education. Using the literature on international education and foreign-study programs as an historical backdrop, this inquiry explores how the students themselves qualify their experiences as interesting or significant with respect to the areas stated above.
