Abstract

The mixed-age classroom is one where students are flexibly grouped according to performance level, no age. Students work on a developmentally appropriate curriculum in a learning environment based upon each child’s needs. This method, which was popular in the 1960’s and early 1970’s, is seeing a resurgence today in many school districts. This study reviews past research on the academic and social benefits, as well the perceived strengths and weaknesses of the mixed-age structure. Results indicate that students’ academic needs are being met in the mixed-age class as well as they are being met in a single-age class. The social benefits seem to be the greatest strength of the mixed-age structure, providing students interaction with a variety of other students with a wide range in ages and ability levels.
