This paper examines multicultural representation in the elementary classroom, with a special emphasis of how cultural variations are portrayed in basal reading books and in children' s literature. This is a synthesis of the observations in two elementary school classrooms, interviews of educators and administrators on a district and schoolwide basis, and a review of literature concerning both positive and negative aspects of multicultural integration.
