Abstract

Critical thinking, the judicious suspension of belief, is a hot topic with educators. One criticism of our public schools is that students are not taught how to think with a critical or questioning frame of mind. This criticism is particularly applicable in the area of the social sciences. This research paper will take a practical look at critical thinking and how it is implemented in the classroom. In particular, what are the steps that a teacher must take in order to encourage and practice critical thinking in the classroom and what are some of the impediments to its implementation. Offered as a solution are ten factors that will assist an educator it establishing the framework and atmosphere necessary to encourage students to think critically. The practical solutions to teaching critical thinking are helpful guides to assist the individual teacher in meeting the needs of the students.
