The group People for the American Way reported books and programs in Oregon schools were challenged 23 times in 1994. State Library official Mary Ginnane was encouraged that schools retained many of the materials challenged. Tim Nashif, director of the Oregon Family Council, saw the challenges as healthy civic engagement.
