Parents have a choice

The color purple by Alice Walker
parents, Junction City High School
Book retained on the reading list and on school shelves
Parents asked that "The Color Purple" be removed from the reading list for a senior level English class at Junction City High School because of violence and sexual content. Students may choose to read "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman" as an alternative. The article author disputes that the book is pornographic, as some critics claim, and lauds teacher Patricia Turley for refusing a parent's request to read a paragraph from the book aloud.
