Iran isn't ready for the world
Statesman Journal (Salem)
The Satanic Verses
Ayatollah Khomeini, Salman Rushdie
Head shot of Ayatollah Khomeini
In this opinion piece the author states that due to Iran’s reaction to the publication of “The Satanic Verses” it is not ready for the rest of the world. Three book distributers have responded to the threats from Ayatollah Khomeini and have pulled their copies of the book from shelves. These same book distributers objected to minor forms of censorship that happened in Boston. The author states that government positions are used to getting these types of threats and that doesn’t make them quit what they are doing. They simply hire guards if needed and return to their jobs. Western Europe is taking a stand and have pulled their democratic representatives out of Iran in response to the death threat to the author of “The Satanic Verses”.
