Defending libraries from pressure groups
Springfield voters approved a charter amendment, sponsored by the Oregon Citizens Alliance, to prohibit the promotion of homosexuality. Supporters of the measure intended to deny homosexuals special rights as a protected class. Now the OCA wants to examine library books for homosexual content and messages. However, the traditional purpose of public libraries is to make a wide variety of materials available to match the interests of the community.
