Mayor Bill Morrisette stands near the city's welcome sign, showing "People, Pride"
Springfield Mayor Bill Morrisette stands in front of the city's welcome sign, where someone carefully replaced the word "progress" with "prejudice."
The City of Springfield’s welcome sign was vandalized in reaction to the passage of an anti-gay measure. The sign usually reads, “People, Pride, Progress,” but the last word was changed to “Prejudice” by an angry protestor. The measure, sponsored by the Oregon Citizens Alliance, amends the Springfield charter to prohibit city government from promoting or facilitating homosexuality. Supporters of the measure oppose special legal rights for homosexuals.
