Abstract

Automated refractionometry using the Canon Autoref R-1 was utilized to investigate optically induced off-axis artifacts. Forty four myopic and near emmetropic eyes were refracted using targets placed at up to eight degrees off the visual axis. Statistically significant spherical and cylindrical deviations were found. The deviations were relatively insignificant clinically for angles of 4o and less, and the implications of this for retinoscopy are discussed in the light of other off-axis studies. The degree of refractive error appears to have little or no relation to these artifacts.
