The intent of this retrospective study is to better understand the effect of physical therapy as practiced at the Center for Sports Medicine (CSM) on range of motion (ROM) following surgical anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair completed by physicians at the Orthopedic and Fracture Clinic. The information was extracted from ACL Reconstruction Data sheets, Admitting Records, and patient charts. Criteria for inclusion was any patient referred to the Center for Sports Medicine for physical therapy following ACL repair from June of 1994 until June of 1997 for which an ACL Reconstruction Data sheet was completed. Fifty patient data sheets with multiple encounters were available for statistical analysis. The sample population included a total of forty-eight patients referred from the Orthopedic and Fracture Clinic and two patients referred from outside local orthopedic surgeons. The data collected during post-operative physical therapy sessions in addition to biographical data was entered into RCOM, a physical therapy database, and an Excel computer analysis program. The evaluation research showed ROM significantly improved with the accelerated physical therapy program utilized by the CSM as a pm1 of recovery following surgical ACL repair completed at The Orthopedic and Fracture Clinic.
