As cervical cancer diagnosis approach 400,000 cases annually, efforts to step-up preventive screenings for cervical dysplasia have increased. These efforts, once managed through paper modes, are now transitioning along with several clinics into an electronic system. In certain instances, providers are finding these new systems make tracking and managing cervical dysplasia, difficult and inefficient. It is apparent that current structure designs may lack, in some settings, the organization necessary to effectively manage this issue.

Objective: To collaborate,with family practice and OB/GYN providers in a regional health clinic located in the upper Midwest, to identify specific weaknesses in the management of cervical dysplasia and to gather suggestions of how to improve effectiveness. Additionally, to create and implement a new cervical dysplasia template within the current operating system with the help of information technology staff to improve the tracking and management of cervical dysplasia.

Design: This is a descriptive research study using a survey intended to elicit feedback to determine the current effectiveness of tracking cervical dysplasia and subsequent management with suggestions on how to improve system ease of use and efficiency.

Procedures: The study will utilize a survey developed to pin-point the defects in the current system given to all family practice and OB/GYN providers with opportunities to identify components for the development of a new template.

Results: Based on a 62% response rate providers at HealthPartners Minnesota Clinic found the current Misys EMR neither adequate nor efficient in the tracking of cervical dysplasia, Several suggestions for the design of a new template were given for later implementation.

Conclusions: It is hoped the new template will assure high quality health care regarding the management of cervical dysplasia by providing the tools necessary to enable clinicians to better manage and track the diagnosis in an electronic environment.
