The ramifications of child sexual abuse are so profound that we cannot afford to have such vast numbers of children exposed to such experiences. Given the degree of scarring people sustain. developing effective methods of curtailing the incidence of sexual abuse is necessary (Miller-Perrin & Wurtele, 1988). As a profession, psychology is in an influential position and can thus play an important role in addressing this issue. Clinical psychology tends to accept its role of treating disorders (Smith,1990). But in this case, the intervention needs to come earlier: Rather than falling into a passive response pattern. a more thorough approach would include reducing the incidence of sexual abuse. This can happen by reevaluating prevention efforts and designing more comprehensive approaches.
