Brass, etched copper, modified nuts and bolts, brass tubing, lens
8" x 3" x 3"
Few people actually try to handle this object; the barbs are very sharp. But those that do are rewarded by an unusual kaleidoscopic effect caused by looking through a multitude of stacked tubes with reflective interiors. This piece causes the viewer to experience a strong desire to handle the object and, at the same time, experience a strong feeling of revulsion at the thought of those sharp spines in such close proximity to the eye. I wanted the viewer to think about the balance we all come to between the risk associated with trying and learning new things and the safety of being less adventurous.
