Psychologists in the hospital environment: An expanding opportunity

18 April 2003

Abstract

The dominance of capitated health care systems and the concomitant restrictions on coverage for psychological services have necessitated exploration and expansion of nontraditional practice settings for psychologists. One nontraditional area that shows promise is collaboration with physicians and other health professionals in treating physical illnesses both in primary care settings and in hospitals, using a biopsychosocial model of care. This dissertation highlights the challenges and benefits of integrating medicine and psychology in a hospital environment, specially on surgical floors, and suggests methods to successfully overcome barriers to cooperative and consolidated practice across professions.
