Criminal Profiling: History, Applications and Practicality

14 December 2001

Abstract

The theory and application of criminal profiling was researched. Although there are minor differences in the definition of criminal profiling, all agree to the practice of making inferences regarding the motivation behind an offense or in developing a biographical sketch of the likely offender. Current applications of criminal profiling techniques aid in the process of capturing criminal's, contribute to further understanding of a case and reassure an agency's own conclusions. Concern arises regarding the minimal amount of research published regarding the accuracy and validity of profiling. This in turn leads to opposing views concerning the use of profiles in the justice system. The field of profiling has many obstacles to overcome in order to gain support in the scientific and psychological realms.
