A Study of the Relationship Between Leadership Style and Conflict Management Style

5 December 2008

Abstract

Within the present study, perceptions of leadership styles and conflict management styles were examined to identify if a relationship exists between these two concepts. Employees and supervisors of a major technology factory were surveyed using the Leadership Practices Inventory, the Global Transformational Leadership Scale, the Bem Sex-Role Inventory, the Hall Conflict Management Scale; and the Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory-II. Transformational leaders were posited to utilize an equal concern for self and others when engaging in conflict. A positive relationship between Transformational / Leadership and integrative/collaborative conflict management styles was found to exist. A negative relationship between Transformational Leadership and an avoidant conflict management style was also found. These findings are consistent with previous research on Transformational Leadership and conflict management.
