Animal Cruelty: The Implications, Underlying Causes, and Meaningful Treatment

25 July 2008

Abstract

Animal cruelty is a problem with short and long term negative consequences . (Haden & Scarpa, 2005) This review describes the problem of animal cruelty with regard to its prevalence, related mental health concerns, consequences, environmental risk factors, and motivations for animal cruelty. Available treatments are examined to increase awareness regarding current intervention options. Suggestions are made regarding how to use current research and treatment information to inform clinical practice and drive ongoing investigation into the understanding, prevention and treatment of the problem of animal cruelty.
