During an 8-month collaboration with the Interprofessional Diabetes Clinic (IDC), occupational therapy students provided screenings, patient education, and other diabetes-related services in a community health setting. Screenings addressed vision changes, sensory loss, occupational performance problems, and other challenges to daily routines resulting from diabetes complications. OT students learned through a mix of academic research, interviews with IDC stakeholders, patient surveys, and hands-on learning in the clinic. Academic learning took place via a review of current research regarding diabetes care among low-income minority individuals, an organizational needs assessment of the IDC, and a needs assessment of the IDC’s patient population.
