The Effects of Dispositional Optimism on Secondary Traumatic Stress, Vicarious Traumatization, and Burnout in Child Welfare Workers

27 July 2007

Abstract

Dispositional·optimism was examined as a mediator between the number of traumatic events experienced and vicarious traumatization, secondary traumatic stress, and burnout. Dispositional optimism was also examined in relation to intention to leave one's job and the number of traumatic events experienced. Participants were 127 child welfare workers. It was found that dispositional optimism mediated the relationship between the experience of traumatic events and vicarious traumatization. Contrary to predictions, the number of traumatic events experienced was not significantly correlated with secondary traumatic. s tress or burnout. Dispositional optimism was also negatively correlated to the number of traumatic events experienced. Dispositional optimism and intention to leave one's job were not significantly correlated. Implications of these results and suggestions for future research are discussed
