Organizations today are struggling with the transition from hierarchical manager subordimite climates to more horizontal team-based environments. The primary challenge is for managers to learn how to become effective team leaders. The cost of ineffective leadership can be profound and adversely affects productivity; employee retention, product outcome, and customer satisfaction. Research on team leadership in the workplace is relatively recent, unorganized, and lacks researchers' consensus. In contrast, research on leadershil( in group psychotherapy has been around for over 100 years and is well-researched and orgariized. It has been suggested that many of the skills necessary to be effective group psychotherapist can improve the effectiveness of team leaders in the workplace. This review illuminates the current discrepancies between the two domains. Solutions are proposed for enhancing the skills and success of organizational team leaders.
