Caring and affection in the elementary classroom

1 January 1996

Abstract

Caring relationships in the classroom are essential to the intellectual development of a student. This analytical paper explains how two different teachers express caring towards their students in order to create a manageable and effective classroom environment. The research also shows how the sensation of touch is used to communicate support to a student, and effectively redirect "off task" behavior. This analytical paper reviews the ideas of various theorists and psychologists on the importance of teaching children how to care and communicating care through appropriate affectionate touch such as hugging, holding hands, or patting on the back.
