A Qualitative study of the experiences of late-deafened adults

Abstract

This study provides a qualitative analysis of the experience of late-deafened adults and the impact of hearing loss for these individuals. A primary goal of this study is to capture, as accurately as possible, the voices of participants as they related their experience. Six adults who had become deaf after age 16 were interviewed about their experiences during and after this important transition. Thematic material from the interviews is discussed in the context of the relational model of self in connection, developed at the Stone Center (Miller & Stiver, 1997) and current literature on communication, acculturation, Deaf culture, and social identity.
