The relationship between Depression and State/Trait Anxiety in the treatment of Depression

31 August 2004

Abstract

Numerous researchers have examined and found a strong overlap in both clinical and non-clinical populations between anxiety and depression. This study examined this interaction when the focus of treatment is on depression. Conducted ANOVAS, ANCOVAs, and t-tests with a clinical sample where subjects met criteria for depression (N = 34) using the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI II; Beck, 1996) and the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI; Spielberger, 1983). Treatment led to significant reductions in both measures of depression and anxiety. The evidence did not support previous findings that the presence of anxiety negatively . impacts depression treatment outcome. Findings also addressed the curvilinear. relationship between depression and anxiety.
