The weight distribution and postural sway patterns of lower limb amputees and normals were examined in this study. Nineteen amputees (12 above-knee and 7 below-knee) were compared to 22 nonamputee subjects in static and dynamic test conditions while standing on a forceplate with stable foot placement. This study found that amputees stand less symmetrically than nonamputee controls. Weight distribution patterns revealed a strong preference for the sound limb among the amputees in most instances. The results also indicated that amputees had increased amounts of sway over nonamputees in all conditions and that they were more dependent on vision than nonamputees in the maintenance of upright stance.
