The purpose of this qualitative study was to answer the question, "How does periodic testing of physical fitness levels of ninth graders affect their fitness levels throughout the school year?" In answering the larger question, the following sub questions will help guide this study: 1.) How do the fitness test results change according to the units in physical education class? 2.) What fitness tests indicate the greatest changes in fitness levels? 3.) What are the students' responses to fitness training? This study took place in an urban area of the Pacific Northwest. The ninth grade students who were studied attended a private high school of approximately 1,000 students. Data for this study were gathered in the form of surveys and fitness testing. The five fitness tests were, pull-ups/flexed arm hang, sit and reach, jump reach, sit-ups and the twelve minute run. This study revealed that varied activities conducted in physical education classes influence fitness levels of students. Students' levels of fitness improved on all five fitness tests administered at some point during the school year. Surveys given to the students showed that students gained a great deal of knowledge about how important fitness is in their lives. The majority of students' self-esteem resulted in a positive experience after completing the five fitness tests
