A theoretical group psychotherapy model for treatment of men sexually abused as children

21 May 1995

Abstract

An integrative group psychotherapy model for the treatment of men sexually abused as children is proposed. The current literature on the use of group therapy with men as well as with women who were sexually abused as children is reviewed. Characteristics and long-term effects of childhood sexual abuse are delineated, with attention given to the differences and similarities between males and females. A review of trauma theory regarding the process of childhood sexual abuse traumatization is presented. Ethical issues in group treatment of this population are considered and the practical implications of this group model for professional psychology are discussed.
