Supreme Court outlaws ban on "obscene" books

26 February 1957

Abstract

The Supreme Court unanimously struck down a Michigan law which made it a crime to sell books deemed to contain obscene language. The suit was brought by Alfred E. Butler, a dealer who was fined $100 after selling a book called "The Devil Rides Outside." Eleven other states are appealing the decision because they have similar laws.
