Will measure 9 ban books?

21 October 1992

Abstract

Multiple librarians are worried that if Measure 9 passes then books may be taken from library shelves. Measure 9 states that “State, regional, and local governments and their properties and monies shall not be used to promote, encourage, or facilitate homosexuality…” John Leon, spokesman for the Oregon Citizens Alliance, who support the measure, say that books will not be taken from shelves. He says that there is no purpose in removing novels, poetry, or non-fiction. There are only two books that they want removed and they are “Heather has two mommies” and “Daddy has a roommate”. Librarians around the county are saying that this measure could start a domino effect for what gets taken off the shelves. In May, Springfield passed a law that prohibits the city from promoting homosexuality.
