Rally raps 9 as threat to books, free ideas

25 October 1992

Abstract

Protesters against Measure 9 marched through downtown Portland and gathered to rally for the right to read. Participants in the march carried books about homosexuality they fear could be banned from libraries, if Measure 9 passes. The measure would amend the state constitution, prohibiting state and local government agencies from using funds or property to encourage homosexuality. Supporters of the initiative argue that the protections of the First Amendment will not be threatened.
