Novel stays on reading list

16 December 1989

Abstract

A request to remove “After the first death” from the required reading list at Reynolds School District was denied. The board agreed 4-0 that the book would stay on the school reading list. Mary Lou Zehendner objected to her son reading the book because of how it dealt with suicide, and a terrorist plot. Skip Squires defended the book and stated that it depicted the conflict between Eastern and Western cultures. Delores Vroorman, principal, said that there are alternative books for students who find assigned books questionable.
