Threat to our freedom

5 November 1985

Abstract

Cal Ragland gives a brief summary of the last year’s events with the challenge of Playboy at the Coos Bay Library. He then says that libraries are storehouses of knowledge and that the ideas in Playboy are entitled to the same constitutional protection as the ideas in the Bible. Ragland says that libraries are for everyone and they must resist censorship but they have little power to enforce the policies so it is up to concerned citizens. He says that as citizens they provide the necessary protection and that they can support the library by approving the library serial levy. A vote against the levy wouldn’t keep Playboy out of libraries, it would instead close the county’s six libraries if funding is denied.
